Appellation of origin

The Moselle Designation of Origin is a wine-growing area in Germany located on the banks of the Moselle River and its tributaries, between Luxembourg and Koblenz, which extend over an area of 10,4000 hectares. The predominant grape variety is Riesling, which produces good quality wines, with notable acidity. Four subregions of this wine-growing area cover the territory, Saar and Ruwer, Middle Moselle, Lower Moselle, (Mittel).

Store

The Markus Molitor winery was established in 1984, when Markus Molitor, at the age of 20, took over the winery from his father. Its main objective was to produce Mosel Riesling under the name “Molitor”, following the tradition of eight generations and preserving the quality that made the region world famous 100 years ago. The properties of its wines are distinguished by their fresh flavors, with depth and elegance. They own 15 plots, located in the center of the Wehlener Klosterberg vineyards.

They have vines that are more than 100 years old. The slopes have an inclination of up to 80% and are cultivated by hand. Molitor's vineyards extend from Brauneberg to Traben-Trarbach and, since 2001, also along the Saar River. Markus Molitor's wines have all types of Mosel grape varieties thanks to the microclimates of the vineyards and the slate soils. In addition, they allocate certain areas to grow Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.

The harvest is carried out manually so that the characteristic properties of the grapes are not lost. They always try to harvest as late as possible to ensure balance between flavor and acidity. The soils are characterized by storing heat and by the specific mineral components of slate soils. This influences the water supply and therefore has a direct effect on the minerality, aroma and acidity of the grapes.

Aging occurs through spontaneous fermentation. In addition to the stainless steel tanks, where fermentation takes place with natural yeasts, high quality oak barrels are also used. Thanks to the moderate contact with oxygen, they have been producing a wine with an unmistakable flavor.
