Description

Lapola 2021 is a white wine with Ribeira Sacra Designation of Origin (Galicia, Spain), produced by the Dominio do Bibei Winery.

It is a wine made from three grape varieties, Godello (88%), Albariño (10%) and Doña Blanca (2%), whose fruits come from vineyards between 13 and 100 years old.

Elaboration

Lapola 2021 is made from 88% Godello, a variety that is difficult to grow and very sensitive to heat strokes, although it produces an aromatic wine. 10% is Albariño, with great expression on the nose and good structure on the palate. And the remaining 2% is Dona Blanca, elegant, with late maturation and low alcohol content.

The production of Lapola 2021 began with a harvest in 10-kilogram boxes, where cluster by cluster was chosen. Afterwards, it remained cold for two days and was sent to the press. Vinification was individual, taking into account the variety and the plot of origin. Spontaneous fermentation was carried out in 5 hectoliter barrels, 12,000 and 24,000 liter foudres and 7,000 liter ovoid concrete tanks.

The first part of the aging was in 600 liter French oak barrels and 1,200 and 2,400 liter Austrian foudres for various uses. The second in concrete tanks. Afterwards, it remained on fine lees.

Appellation of origin

The Ribeira Sacra Denomination of Origin was born in 1997, which includes the vineyards of the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, in Galicia. It is divided into five subzones Amandi, Chantada, Quiroga-Bibei, Ribeiras do Miño and Ribeiras do Sil. Its purpose is to guarantee the origin of the products produced in the area, guarantee quality and promote the wines produced.

There are several varieties of grapes grown in Ribeira Sacra. Within the category of white grapes we find: Albariño, Loureira, Treixadura, Godello and Dona Branca. Regarding the reds: Garnacha, Tintorera and Mouratón.

The protection of the rivers provides a microclimate to the Ribeira Sacra, which, with the southern orientation of the steep slopes, favors the correct maturation that the grapes need to produce wines that, even in Roman times, were described as Liquid Gold of the Sil.

In Spain, the communities that buy the most DO Ribeira Sacra wine are Valencia with 1,997.40 hectoliters, Madrid with 698.94 hectoliters, Catalonia 313.97 hectoliters and Castilla y León 118.80 hectoliters. Regarding sales outside the national border, exports to countries such as Belgium, Canada, China, Ireland, Italy or Switzerland have increased; highlighting the increase in Russia, the Netherlands and Germany. This increase is due to visits to international events where they have been able to promote products belonging to their Denomination.

Store

The Dominio do Bibei winery, producer of Lapola 2020 wine and belonging to Ribeira Sacra, was born in 2002 with the aim of producing elegant and Atlantic wines that transmit the essence of the place.

The wines from said winery are characterized by the climate, the soil and their particular way of production. The transitional oceanic climate, accentuated by the contrasts between seasons, causes an average annual rainfall of 700 mm, especially in winter and spring. Summer and autumn are drier, although with greater thermal amplitude. When September arrives, the month of the grape harvest, the weather is quite unpredictable in the vineyard area.

Regarding the soil, the vineyards are located in a remote area, where the rock on which they are cultivated is of granitic origin. Other areas are sandy, where minerals such as mica, quartz or feldspar influence the properties of the grapes. Likewise, clay and slate soils are also found.

We find the vineyards at heights of 200 to 700 meters above sea level, with different orientations, something very optimal for growing white or red grapes.

The production consists of a manual harvest, where a selection is carried out in small boxes, separating the grapes according to the nature of the soil, the climate and their variety. It is selected cluster by cluster and bago by bago. After fermentation, old barrels are used, choosing the wood depending on the grape variety, to obtain a personal wine that takes into account each of the grape's particularities. Once bottled, all the wines rest for 18 months in the cellar.

They achieve wines with a low alcohol content, little sense of wood, elegant, complex and full of sensations.
